![]() Twilight and Flash's personalities don't exactly mix well, either. As such, the two end up basically in juxtaposition as the movie forcibly pushes them together, making Flash's flaws seem that much more awful. In fact, I'd argue that she's the character that develops the most during FiM. Twilight is a very strong character who features significant development throughout FiM. From the start to the finish, he basically remains unchanged (which is actually a somewhat endemic problem to EQG's characters, but that's irrelevant to this current argument).Īll of this is especially egregious considering he's supposed to be the romantic interest of Twilight. This would be forgivable if he developed as a character after his introduction, but this doesn't end up happening. We know that he's a sports star, that he plays guitar, and that he's. He's not meant to be a full-fledged character, but rather one that is introduced and mentioned only in the film, and his sole purpose is to serve as the popular jock who ends up sweeping the socially awkward character off of her feet, à la typical, wish-fulfilling, high school story tropes.ĭuring the film, he's barely defined. Flash is a newcomer, without all of those aforementioned firmly established, deep characteristics. The Mane Six may be in high school, but all of the strong character attributes that make them work so well in the main show are still there.Īnd then there's Flash. One of the primary reasons it actually works is because DHX was playing with already firmly established, strong characters. A deeply flawed movie, but enjoyable nonetheless. However, I found Equestria Girls to be an entertaining and enjoyable movie, despite my initial misgivings. You can argue this isn't a situation too dissimilar to Friendship is Magic's inception, but the vital difference is that it's clear DHX was handed down certain mandates from Hasbro that served as strong restrictions in comparison to FiM's full, unrestricted, fresh start with Lauren Faust's unique and unconventional vision.Īs such, DHX was probably required to create a film/universe that they thought would inch into the market Monster High had created, à la a typical high school setting with typical high school tropes and plot. As such, they requested DHX make a film that would make little girls want said toys. Hasbro wanted a toy set to compete with Monster High, and decided to leverage their incredibly popular and already well known My Little Pony brand to create it. The first Equestria Girls is essentially DHX making the best of a bad situation, at least from what I can see. You want to talk about Flash Sentry? Let's talk about Flash Sentry.
